Fancy Pants Wynette Texas series Book 1 edition by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Contemporary Romance eBooks

I like Susan Elizabeth Phillips' books. But this one. Ugh. Too much ancient history on the heroine. I skimmed and skimmed to find the current timeline. None of the characters were likable. Dallie (stupid name) was immature and arrogant, Francesca was immature and arrogant. Holly Grace needed to get a life of her own. The story was slow and angst ridden. I won't bother reading the rest of the series. Disappointed.

Fancy Pants Wynette Texas series Book 1 edition by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

I've been binge reading Susan Phillips' "Chicago Stars" series books this summer. Once I finished all seven of them, I thought I'd try this series. The writing and storyline at the beginning of "Fancy Pants" struck me as immature and not one of SEP's best. BUT, just keep reading, the story develops and the characters really grow on you.
I had trouble sticking with it. Then it got pretty good in the middle, but finishing it was a hardship. I hardly ever don't finish a book, but this one was close. There was too much unnecessary stuff in the beginning. Setting up the story didn't have to be so involved. Then, it was a bit funny, but too soon, it was back to stretching out unnecessarily. Dallie and Francesca's story was sweet but all the other stories involved just dampened the plot instead of strengthening it.
I'll try another SEP story and hopefully I'll have better luck. Natural Born Charmer and The Great Escape were awesome stories BTW.
Admitly I wanted to fling this book against the wall more than once as I began reading it - the first 100-150 pages are less than typical SEP writing. It was one of her earlier books so she had not crafted her writing style as we know it in today's books; however, once you get past the first 100 pages of "Old World" fluff - they could be cut down to 10 pages and had more effect - the book takes off! When it does, fasten your seat belt and hang on. It's SEP at her finest! The last couple of chapters - not to mention the epoulge - more than makes up for the first 100 or so pages! I would give it a 5 star rating but in all fairness I had to deduct 1/2 a star for the 100 or so pages in the beginning. All in all, well worth the read.
One of my favorite Phillips books. Great Up by Her Bootstraps plot. Young girl saves herself, rags to riches. Not some clinging vine, waiting to be rescued by Prince Charming. But the hero is amazing, in spite of that. Good old Southern boy. Overcomes sad story of his own. Hard to believe he's totally a product of the imagination. VERY realistic. As someone who's lived in Georgia, I've met quite a few men with various different parts of his personality. Appealing plot and writing style. I read it over and over. Lots of funny, happy parts. Makes you smile.
Fancy Pants is an older work of Susan Elizabeth Phillips and one I missed while reading SEP's earlier books several years back. After finishing Call me Irresistible, I couldn't help but wonder about Ted's mom, Francesca, and her story. I discovered it was revealed in the book, Fancy Pants. This story takes the reader on the journey of the life of Miss Francesca Serritella Day, from her momentous conception, to her tumultuous 30's. Born in an English upper class home, Francesca is used to having people cater to her every whim. When it comes to men, they can't resist her Vivian Leigh-like beauty. Francesca becomes involved in an opportunity to leave her home in England and make it to Hollywood for a chance in a lifetime movie career. When things do not turn out the way she thought they would, she must finally live in the real world and make a life for herself in a new country at the tender age of 21. This story is entertaining, funny and heartwarming. I couldn't help but fall in love with the characters from golf pro Dallie Beaudine to Holly Grace, Skeet, Miss Sybil, little Teddy and of course our little Miss Fancy Pants. Take the journey with Francesca and see how she manages to dig herself out of the deep hole her life has become and work her way up to a new, grownup beginning.
This is the first book I read by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and it turned me into one of her loyal fans. Although I first read this book a number of years ago I recently reread it on my . The book's storyline, and the characters stand the test of time; I like Francesca, Dallie, and Teddy (and everyone else) just as much now as I did when I first discovered them. If you've not read any of Susan's books I recommend starting with this one.
FANCY PANTS is the first book in the Wynette, Texas series. It is the story of Francesca Day who is spoiled and self-absorbed when she comes to the United States to star in what she thinks is going to be an important film but turns out to be a B movie. In the process of running away, she meets Dallie Beaudine, a professional golfer who is surly and has dark demons. The two fight and argue and spar and end up lovers. It is not until ten years later, however, that the two end up resolving their romance.

This is an epic story that covers over thirty years of history from Franscesca's parents and childhood to Dallie's first marriage. There are several characters that get a detailed history here. Phillips has complex stories as a standard, but this book was just too long for me. I kept feeling that there were sections that could have been excised so that the focus was clearer.

I very much enjoyed the story of Francesca and Dallie and I ended up liking the characters even though they were rather unlikeable in the beginning. The book beautifully details the changes that Francesca especially goes through. Being an early book of Phillips, however, it does not fully reflect the finely crafted stories that she has told since.

A particular like for me is the character of Dallie. I appreciated Phillips willingness to give her hero a weakness where he is so afraid of failure that he would rather not try. I think there is much truth in this character that makes his compelling and his ultimate victory so rewarding.

If I read this again, I would probably skip portions of the book but I like the main storyline.
